Symptoms

You can visit the iTunes Store from your iPod touch or iPhone. If you are having issues with the iTunes Store, you may consider trying these steps.

Products Affected

iPhone, iTunes Store, iTunes, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPod touch (2nd generation)

Resolution

Make sure you are connected to the Internet

If you are having trouble connecting to the iTunes Store for iPhone and iPod touch make sure you are connected to the Internet. For help with getting connected, check the iPod touch Features Guide and this document.

Note: If you own an iPhone, you can connect to the iTunes Store over the cellular data network for purchasing and downloading music and for streaming and downloading podcasts (purchasing and downloading music on iPhone requires access to a Wi-Fi or cellular network1).

Managing your downloads

To see the status of downloading songs, audiobooks, podcasts, or videos, tap More > Downloads. You can then pause a download by tapping the Pause button.

If you need to turn off iPod touch or iPhone or leave the area of your Wi-Fi connection, don't worry about interrupting the download. iPod touch or iPhone starts the download again the next time iPod touch or iPhone joins a Wi-Fi network with an Internet connection. Or if you open iTunes on your computer, iTunes completes the download to your iTunes library.

Finding your purchased content

Purchased items are added to a Purchased playlist on iPod touch or iPhone. If you delete the Purchased playlist, iTunes creates a new one when you buy an item from the iTunes Store for iPhone and iPod touch.

iTunes automatically syncs items you've purchased from the iTunes Store for iPhone and iPod touch back to your computer the next time you sync. This lets you listen to the purchases on your computer and provides a backup if you delete purchases from iPod touch or iPhone. The purchases are synced to the "Purchased on (iPod/iPhone name)" playlist on your computer. iTunes creates the playlist if it doesn't exist. This playlist allows you to keep track of any purchases you've made on the go.

iTunes also syncs any purchases you made on the go to the Purchased playlist on your computer. Using the Purchased playlist, you can keep track of any purchases you've made on the go or on your computer all in one place.

You can use iTunes to verify that all the music, videos, and other items you bought from the iTunes Music Store for iPhone and iPod touch are in your iTunes library. You might want to do this if a download was interrupted. Here's how:

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
  2. In iTunes 8, choose Store > Check for Available Downloads or, in iTunes 7, choose Store > Check for Purchases.
  3. Enter your iTunes Store account ID and password, then click Check.
  4. Purchases not yet on your computer will be downloaded.

If some of the purchases downloaded on the iPod touch or iPhone and some downloaded on the computer, see this document for steps to transfer purchased content to the computer. Then you can sync to transfer the content downloaded on the computer back to your iPhone or iPod touch.

The Purchased playlist displays all your purchases. However, because you can add or remove items in this list, it might not be accurate. To see all your purchases, click iTunes Store, click Account, log in, and then click Purchase History.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Some albums include bonus content such as bonus songs, videos and digital booklets. Bonus content such as music videos and songs will download directly to iPod touch or iPhone, while digital booklets will be added to your computer's download queue.
  • While Parental Controls are not synced to your iPod touch or iPhone, songs and albums on the iTunes Store for iPhone and iPod touch will be marked as either Clean or Explicit. When purchasing music, take care that you are purchasing the correct version of the song or album.
