Boot Camp 2.0: Video issues with Windows Vista or XP

Boot Camp, Mac OS X 10.5, Intel-based Mac that uses NVidia graphics

Symptoms

External displays are detected using Microsoft Windows Vista but may display a black screen. Or, other video issues may occur when using Windows Vista or XP via Boot Camp 2.0.

Resolution

This solution only applies to Macs using NVidia graphics. Updating your NVidia graphics driver in Windows may address the issue. If you're not sure what kind of graphics your Mac uses, see "What kind of graphics does my Mac use?" below.

  1. While started up in Windows, download and install the following NVidia driver to address this issue:

    If you use Windows XP: http://download.info.apple.com/Mac_OS_X/OTHER/BC_NVIDIA/WinXP32(167.44).exe
    If you use Windows Vista: http://download.info.apple.com/Mac_OS_X/OTHER/BC_NVIDIA/WinVista32(167.44).exe
  2. After downloading, double-click the installer file to start the installation, then follow the onscreen instructions.

What kind of graphics does my Mac use?

If you're not sure what kind of graphics your Mac uses, in Mac OS X:

  1. Open System Profiler (in /Applications/Utilties).
  2. In the Hardware section of the System Profiler, click on Graphics/Display.

Information about your display hardware should appear to the right.

Or, in Windows, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click on Control Panel
  3. Double click Display
  4. Click the Settings tab

Your display model should appear in the Display field. If you need more information click on Advanced, which will provide more detail on your display.
