Logic 7: Issues with unauthorized Audio Units

Products Affected

Logic Express 7, Logic Pro 7

Symptoms

When using Logic Pro 7 or Logic Express 7, Audio Unit plug-ins that require authorization may not be available.

Resolution

This happens because Logic scans new Audio Units to ensure that they are compatible. In some cases, the AU Manager will "fail" copy-protected plug-ins that are not yet authorized. This document describes how to resolve the issue.

Dongles and authorization apps

For a plug-in that's protected by a hardware dongle, or that has a standalone application for entering an authorization code:

  1. If Logic is running, quit it.
  2. Authorize the plug-in as recommended by the manufacturer.
  3. Open Logic.
  4. From the Logic Pro (or Logic Express) application menu, choose Preferences > Start Logic AU Manager... .
  5. Click the Start AU Manager button in the resulting dialog.
  6. Locate the plug-in in the list, and select the checkbox to the left of its name. (It will be rescanned.)
  7. Click OK at the bottom of the Logic Audio Units Manager window to relaunch Logic.

Built-in software authorization

If the plug-in presents a built-in interface for authorization when scanned:

  1. Open Logic.
  2. From the Logic Pro (or Logic Express) application menu, choose Preferences > Start Logic AU Manager... .
  3. Click the Start AU Manager button in the resulting dialog.
  4. Locate the plug-in in the list, and select the checkbox to the left of its name. It will be rescanned, but will likely fail. Leave it checked anyway.
  5. Click OK at the bottom of the Logic Audio Units Manager window to relaunch Logic. A dialog will appear warning that an incompatible plug-in is enabled. Click OK to continue.
  6. Insert the plug-in on a Track, Bus, or Aux. A dialog asking to authorize will appear. Follow the manufacturer suggested procedure to authorize the plug-in.
  7. From the Logic Pro (or Logic Express) application menu, choose Preferences > Start Logic AU Manager... .
  8. Click the Start AU Manager button in the resulting dialog.
  9. Locate the plug-in in the list, and click its Rescan button. It should no longer fail validation for copy protection reasons.
  10. Click OK at the bottom of the Logic Audio Units Manager window to relaunch Logic.
