Mac OS X 10.5: Time Machine - "The backup volume could not be mounted" alert

Symptoms

If you back up to a Mac OS X 10.5 Server volume or Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard computer using Personal File Sharing via Time Machine, and the password to access the network volume is changed, Time Machine will report "The backup volume could not be mounted" in Mac OS X 10.5.

Resolution

Mount the network based volume va the Finder's Connect to Server option. Go to Time Machine preferences in System Preferences, click "Change Disk" and reselect the mounted volume as the backup disk.
