Mac OS X 10.4: Letters may be unexpectedly added to fax numbers

Symptoms

When manually typing a fax number, the "To:" field may automatically replace part of the fax number with letters.

This may happen if the first part of the number you are entering is the same as the first part of a fax number already stored in Address Book, even if the entire number is different.

Products Affected

Mac OS Printing/Fax (any version)

Resolution

  1. After you see a name or letters appear in the "To:" field, type the entire fax number over again from the beginning without deleting the unwanted letters.
  2. When finished entering the entire phone number, delete the unwanted letters at the beginning of the phone number, so that only the intended fax number remains in the "To:" field.

For example, as you type numbers in the To: field, letters unexpectedly appear in it. Ignore the letters at first, retype the entire fax number so it appears after the letters, then delete the unwanted letters so that only the desired fax number remains in the To: field.

Tip: If you'll send additional faxes to the same number in the future, add it to Address Book to prevent this issue.

Additional Information

When manually entering a fax number in Mac OS X 10.5 or later, matching fax numbers found in Address Book will not be entered into the To: field unless you click on the desired number or select it using the Up or Down arrow keys.
