MobileMe: How to upload package files to iDisk

Symptoms

In Mac OS X, you may notice a special kind of file (including entire applications) called a package, or bundle. Package/bundle files are essentially sealed folders--they are a collection of multiple files and other folders that appear as and act like a single file when viewed in the Finder. Most Mac OS X applications are package files, for example.

If you try to upload a package file to your iDisk, you may see the following alert message:

"One or more items can't be copied. Do you want to skip them and copy the remaining items?"

This issue may occur when uploading a package file that contains symbolic links which cannot be copied your iDisk (or any other WebDAV volume). (A symbolic link is a specific kind of file that points to another file, much like an alias. Unlike a hard link, a symbolic link doesn't contain the data that's in the target file, it just points to a different entry somewhere in the file system.)

Resolution

To upload the package file to iDisk, archive the package file first. Click once on the file you'd like to upload and from the File menu, choose Create Archive of "filename.pkg" (or choose Compress in Mac OS X 10.5). This will create a new archive file called filename.zip, which can then be uploaded to your iDisk.
