.Mac: Backup appears to stop responding when restoring a backup

Symptoms

If you have a large number of incremental backup files in the Backup folder of your iDisk, Backup may become unresponsive (appear to "hang") when restoring a backup. When this happens, Backup may appear to not be responding in a Force Quit window or Activity Monitor, even though it may actually be working correctly.

Products Affected

.Mac, iDisk, Backup

Resolution

Depending on the size of your backups, the number of incremental backups, your Internet connection, your computer's speed, and other factors, Backup may appear to "hang" for several minutes or longer when restoring as it scans the backup files. Once Backup has completed scanning all of the incremental backups, you can restore as normal.

Tip: To help avoid this issue, you may wish to create a new, full backup in Backup (choose Full Backup from the Plan menu), then manually remove any previous incremental or full backup files from your iDisk.

Additional information

You can confirm that Backup is still active by:

  1. Opening Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilities).
  2. Double-clicking Backup in the Activity Monitor window.
  3. Clicking Open Files and Ports.
  4. Confirming that files are still actively being opened and read by Backup.

As long as the Open Files and Ports window is actively changing, Backup has not stopped responding, and you can safely wait for it to complete.
