MobileMe: ".Mac legacy client exited abnormally" alert message in Mac OS X 10.4

Symptoms

When accessing the Sync pane of .Mac System Preferences in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, this alert message may appear: "There was a problem with the sync operation. .Mac legacy client exited abnormally."

Resolution

If you receive this alert, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that your MobileMe password is entered correctly in the Account pane of the .Mac preferences in System Preferences. If "name or password invalid" appears in the Account pane, this issue can occur in the Sync pane.
  2. Make sure that your keychain is working as expected. If it is not, use the troubleshooting steps in the same article if necessary.
  3. Repair permissions and verify your Mac OS X volume with Disk Utility.
  4. If this does not resolve the issue, perform an Archive and Install installation of Mac OS X 10.4, preserving user and network settings. Afterwards, update Mac OS X with Software Update.
     

Note: MobileMe requires Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later. If you use an earlier version of Mac OS X 10.4, download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Update.
