This Read Me file contains technical notes and tips that may prove helpful when you
use ClarisDraw 1.0, as well as the latest news about great features of ClarisDraw.

I. TECHNICAL NOTES AND TIPS
-----------------------------

A. Installation
Follow the instructions in the installation guide to install ClarisDraw.
You can't copy the files to your hard drive using the DOS copy command,
because the files are compressed to fit on fewer disks. The setup program
decompresses files during installation.

You must be running SMARTDRV.EXE to install ClarisDraw. Claris recommends
using the default values for SmartDrive.

ClarisDraw is a 32-bit application. Before installing ClarisDraw on a
computer running Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11, you must
install Win32s, which is included in this package.

Note: If you are using Windows 95, do not install Win32s.

Some virus checking software may interfere with the installer or slow down the installation

process. Turn off any virus checking software before starting the ClarisDraw Installer.
You can turn virus checking back on after your installation is successful.

You cannot start ClarisDraw from a directory whose name contains upper
ASCII characters (for example é, ©, £). This is a limitation of Win32s.

C. System Requirements and Compatibility
IBM and compatible personal computers, 386 or higher processor, and a
recommended 8Mb of RAM.
Hard disk with 15Mb (to install all clip art libraries) available and
Windows 3.1 or higher.
Printers supported: Hewlett Packard LaserJet, PaintJet, DeskJet series.
Postscript printers such as Apple LaserWriter, IBM Laser Printers, and a
wide variety of other Windows compatible printers.

D. Error messages
If you encounter an error message that indicates there is not enough memory
to perform an operation, Claris recommends:
--adjusting your Virtual Memory setting (see Performance tips for

Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 below)
--removing any unnecessary drivers and TSRs from the CONFIG.SYS file
to free up more memory in DOS
--closing other applications and ClarisDraw documents that are
running in the background

If either XTNDGR32.dll or XTNDGR95.dll is not present in the Claris directory,
ClarisDraw will not launch. Reinstall the XTND option in Custom Install.
(If XTNDGR95.dll is not present, the alert erroneously states "XTNDGR32.dll is not present".)

E. Performance tips for Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11
32-bit applications such as ClarisDraw 1.0 require that Virtual Memory
is on. To improve performance on computers with 8 MB of memory or less,
Claris recommends setting virtual memory to permanent and using the
suggested size for your virtual-memory setting as displayed in the Virtual
Memory dialog box. This value is typically twice the size of physical memory, but
should be at least 11,700 K or 11.7 MB.

If the suggested size of virtual memory is less than twice the physical

memory installed on your computer, you might need to increase your free disk
space by removing unwanted files or defragmenting your hard disk.

Note: DOS 6.0 users can use DEFRAG.EXE.

To set virtual memory:
1. In the Program Manager, open the Main Group, double-click the
Control Panel icon, and then double-click the 386 Enhanced icon.
2. Click Virtual Memory and then click the Change.
3. Select Permanent from the Type pop-up menu.
4. Click the checkbox next to Use 32-Bit Disk Access. Note: This
setting is NOT recommended for laptops running on battery power.
5. Click OK.

If you are an experienced Windows user and you have adjusted your virtual
memory settings as described, but still want to improve your system's performance:

--In DOS, run:
DEFRAG
MEMMAKER

--Change the following settings in the CONFIG.SYS file:
FlLES=60
STACKS=9,256

--Add the following line to the CONFIG.SYS file:
BUFFERS=10

--Add the following line to the [WINDOWS] section of the WIN.INI
file:
DefaultQueueSize=16


--Add the following lines to the [386enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI
file:
DMABuffersize=64
XLatBufferSize=128
MaxBPS=768

--Delete the following lines from the [386enh] section of the
SYSTEM.INI file:
EGA80W0A.FON...
EGA40W0A.FON...
CGA80W0A.FON...
CGA40W0A.FON...

--Always use SmartDrive!

F. Using ClarisDraw with Windows 95
You cannot launch ClarisDraw 1.0 using the Network Neighborhood feature of Windows 95.
Use a different method to launch ClarisDraw instead (for example, use Explorer).

G. Printing
If you have trouble printing, try installing an updated printer driver,
available from your printer manufacturer or Microsoft Corporation. For
instructions on installing a driver and configuring your printer, see the
the Control Panel information in the Microsoft documentation.
ClarisDraw requires a valid default printer driver, NOT the Generic/Text
Only driver.

To select or change the default printer:
1. In the Program Manager, open the Main Group, double-click the
Control Panel icon, and then double-click the Printers icon.

2. Select a printer from the Installed Printers list and click Set As
Default Printer. If no printers appear in the list, see your
Microsoft documentation for instructions on installing
printers.

Printing with Hewlett-Packard printers in PCL mode:
Under some conditions, the default settings for printers using PCL mode
will not print rotated text correctly. To change the default settings:
1. In the Program Manager, open the Main Group, double-click the
Control Panel icon, and then double-click the Printers icon.
2. Select the printer under "Installed Printers", then click Setup.
3. In the Setup dialog box, click the Options button. Change the
Graphics Mode option to "Raster", then click OK for each dialog box.
Click Close for the setup box, and exit Control Panel.
(Note: for Windows 95 users, please see your Win95 documentation for
changing printer properties).

H. Video cards and drivers
If your screen doesn't display objects correctly, you may have a problem

with your video driver. Try changing the resolution to 640x480 or 800x600
or try changing the number of colors displayed (for example, 256, 32K, or
millions of colors).

To verify a video driver problem, change the video driver to Windows
standard VGA and run ClarisDraw. If the problem disappears, contact the
video card manufacturer for the latest version of the video card driver or
use the driver that is included with the Windows installation.

I. ClarisDraw INI file settings
If you experience either of the problems listed below, make the suggested
changes to the [ClarisDraw] section of the CLARIS.INI file in your Windows
directory:
--Problem:
Color/gradient palettes do not draw completely, or show up with
black or missing colors/gradients
Suggested setting:
Cache Palettes = 0

--Problem:
Tools are not drawn correctly, or display as black
Suggested setting:
BitmapTools=0

J. Fonts
If fonts do not display or scale correctly (for example, if they are clipped or
overlap), Claris recommends that you:

--Make certain a valid printer driver is selected as the default
and that it is NOT the Generic/Text Only driver
--Enable TrueType fonts (see below)
--Make certain the standard Windows fonts, such as Arial, are
properly installed

To delete or reinstall standard Windows fonts, see the Microsoft documentation.

To enable True Type fonts:

1. In the Program Manager, open the Main Group, double-click the
Control Panel icon, and then double-click the Fonts icon.
2. Click TrueType, and then click Enable TrueType Fonts.

K. Sharing ClarisDraw files between the Macintosh and Windows
ClarisDraw 1.0 for Windows has the same file format, user interface, and
features as ClarisDraw 1.0 for the Macintosh. You can create a
ClarisDraw document in Windows and edit it on an Apple Mac OS computer, or
vice versa. Therefore, if you work with both Macintosh and Windows versions of
ClarisDraw, or if you collaborate with colleagues who use ClarisDraw 1.0
for Macintosh, you can work without translating files.

To open a ClarisDraw 1.0 Windows file using ClarisDraw 1.0 for the Macintosh:


1. Hold down the Option key and choose Open from the File menu.
2. Choose ClarisDraw in the Show section of the Open dialog box.
3. Double-click on the name of the file you want to convert.

To open a ClarisDraw 1.0 Macintosh file using ClarisDraw 1.0 for Windows:

1. If you are using Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups
3.11, make sure the filenames of the Macintosh ClarisDraw files you want to
convert follow DOS filename conventions (8 characters or less) and end with
the .CDD extension. (For ClarisDraw Library files, use the .CLB extension.)
2. Open the files in ClarisDraw 1.0 for Windows.

If you want to transfer ClarisDraw files between platforms via 3.5-inch disks, you must
use a file transfer program that lets you create and use PC-formatted 3.5-inch disks on a
Macintosh. To copy the ClarisDraw files onto a PC-formatted
disk, follow the directions in the documentation for the file transfer
program you are using. When you use a multi-platform server (such as Novell
Netware) to transfer files from a Macintosh to a Windows computer, you can use

the ClarisDraw documents right off the server. No file transfer program is
required.

Fonts, margins, page breaks, and some graphics might display differently
when a file is transferred between Macintosh and Windows. You might have to adjust the
margins and page breaks in the transferred file to restore the original
appearance.

You can minimize font problems by installing and using the TrueType fonts
that ship with Windows. When you open a file, ClarisDraw first checks to see if each of the
fonts in the document is installed in the current system. If a font is not installed,
ClarisDraw checks its font mapping information to substitute an
appropriate font. Font mapping information is stored in the Claris Font
Map file inside the Claris folder in your System folder on Macintosh and
in the [ClarisFontMap] section of the CLARIS.INI file in your Windows
directory on the PC. If a font is not listed in the font mapping file,
it is mapped to Helvetica on the Macintosh and to Arial on the PC.

L. Network installation issues

ClarisDraw can be installed and run simultaneously by multiple users off
of a server. See the "ClarisDraw for Windows Installation Guide" for information on how
to set up ClarisDraw on a server.

Multiple simultaneous users can share ClarisDraw palettes. However, if
simultaneous users edit the same palette, only changes from the last save are
retained. For this reason, Claris recommends that users who access
ClarisDraw from a server and who want to customize palettes should store
their PALETTES directory on their own hard disks.

Multiple users cannot simultaneously open the same ClarisDraw document or
library.

M. Converting MacDraw Pro files to ClarisDraw 1.0 for Windows format

If you have ClarisDraw 1.0 for the Macintosh, use the procedure below to convert MacDraw Pro
files. If you don't have ClarisDraw 1.0 for the Macintosh, you will need to acquire the MacDraw
Pro Convertor application from Claris*.


To acquire the converter using America Online, use the keyword "Claris",
click on the software library icon, choose "Updaters@Utilities" from the
list that appears, and click on "MDPro --> C.Draw Win Converter".

To acquire the converter using CompuServe, go "WINCLARIS", click on the
Browse Libraries icon, choose "General Info/Utilities" from the list, and
click on "Convert2DOS utility to convert M..."

To convert a MacDraw Pro file:

1. Open the MacDraw Pro file in ClarisDraw 1.0 for the Macintosh.
2. Save the file as a ClarisDraw file with a name that follows DOS file naming
conventions (8 characters or less) and ends with the .CDD extension (for
example, PARIS.CDD).
3. Open the file in ClarisDraw 1.0 for Windows.

N. Paint mode color palettes
In Paint mode, the color palettes each display the default 256-color ClarisDraw palette rather
than a palette customized according to the colors in a paint frame.

ClarisDraw 1.0v2 Detailed Improvements


Claris periodically issues maintenance releases of shipping software
applications. A maintenance release is identified by v2, v3, v4, etc.
numbering. The improvements made in ClarisDraw 1.0v2 and ClarisDraw
1.0v3 are included in this package and are detailed below.

Improved Use of ClarisImpact files

· ClarisImpact 2.0 drawing and presentation files can be read
· More that one art library can be opened simultaneously
· Custom color palettes can be imported
· Improved translation between ClarisDraw and ClarisImpact

Miscellaneous

· Right mouse button shows Windows95 menus
· Black and white CGM images import correctly
· Corrected map of Japan in ClarisArt library
· Corrected images in the code flags and map symbols libraries
· Under Windows95, selecting ClarisDraw Options Template (*.cdt) in
the Save dialog will not automatically switch to the Claris directory.
An Options file must be located in the Claris directory to be invoked
with subsequent File:New commands.
· Under Windows95, orientation of printed bound text with non-standard

fonts to PostScript printers is incorrect with default printer settings.
To correct this, open Print Setup, click the 'More' button, PostScript
tab, and select Optimized for Portability.

II. GREAT FEATURES OF CLARISDRAW 1.0
-----------------------------------

A. Cross-Platform Support
ClarisDraw 1.0 is now available for Windows and Windows 95 as well as the Macintosh and
Power Macintosh. You can easily exchange files between platforms, because no file
translation is required.

B. Great Looking Graphics
Get creative with a broader palette of colors and gradients. Get your work done faster using
the object info palette and zooming controls. The ClarisArt libraries contain over 400 new
clip art images to increase the variety of high-quality art you can use in your charts and
graphics.

C. Breakthrough Graphic Intelligence
SmartSymbol Libraries dramatically speed up the creation of graphics with
drag and drop ease, and you can add your own frequently used graphics to a
custom library. Editing is easier as you can search and replace objects

dragged from libraries, just as with text.
