If you try to perform a NetBoot or NetInstall on an Xserve G5, their network connection needs to be from the en0 Ethernet port.

Products Affected

Xserve

Symptom

In the Startup Disk preference pane of the Xserve G5, no network boot volumes are found.

Solution

If you are using an Xserve G5 as the client of a Network Install or of a Network Booting server, use the lower Ethernet port and the en0 device.
If your Xserve G5's connection is over a VLAN port created in the OS from either the Network preference pane or the command line tool network setup, you will not be able to perform a NetInstall or NetBoot on the Xserve G5.
Serving NetBoot and NetInstall images from a VLAN created in the OS is not supported. As a workaround, connect an Ethernet switch to the Xserve G5. Instead of the server inserting the tag, have the switch insert the VLAN tag.
