Xserve G5: No boot and no video after power interruption

If an Xserve G5 appears to be on but you see no startup flash and no video, the server may need the power to be disconnected for a few seconds.

After a brief power interruption, the server's fans are spinning and the power indicator shows the server is on, but you don't see any video and didn't see the startup flash from the indicator LEDs.


Solution

  1. Disconnect the Xserve's power cable.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cable and turn the server on.

This symptom does not indicate an issue with the server and does not require hardware repair. The Xserve's power management architecture requires 5 to 10 seconds to reset.
