iMovie HD 6: Cannot update Ken Burns clips after emptying iMovie Trash

Issue or symptom

While in iMovie HD 6, if you empty the iMovie Trash, the Ken Burns clips in your project will be committed to their current settings. And, you will no longer be able to make adjustments in the Photo Settings palette for the rendered clip.

  • Attempting to use the Photo Settings palette will result in an all black preview pane
  • Clicking the Update button in the palette will have no effect

Solution

If you want to continue to make changes to the Ken Burns settings of a clip, either avoid emptying the iMovie Trash of the project, or simply reimport the original still image again.
