If you unplug your Apple USB modem before AOL completely disconnects, your computer may kernel panic.

After AOL says "Goodbye," wait for the modem to fully disconnect before you unplug it. After the modem has fully disconnected, you can safely unplug it and you shouldn't get a kernel panic.
