iTunes for Windows unexpectedly quits when opened

Under some situations, iTunes may quit unexpectedly when you open it. You may see the error message:

"iTunes has experienced an error and needs to close. Do you want to send the error to Microsoft?"
To resolve this issue, remove all QuickTime installations and repair iTunes, which will install QuickTime 7 on your computer.

In Windows Vista:

  1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  2. Click Uninstall a program.
    Alternately, in Classic View of Control Panel, click Programs and Features.
  3. Select QuickTime.
  4. Click Uninstall.
  5. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
  6. Repeat steps 3 through 6 if you have multiple QuickTime entries listed.
  7. Select iTunes.
  8. Click the Change/Remove button.
  9. Click Repair.
  10. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
  11. Click OK.

In Windows XP:

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  2. Open the "Add or Remove Programs" control panel.
  3. Select QuickTime.
  4. Click the Change/Remove button.
  5. Click Remove.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 if you have multiple QuickTime entries listed.
  8. Select iTunes.
  9. Click the Change/Remove button.
  10. Click Repair.
  11. Click OK.
