Mac OS X 10.4

If you have Internet Sharing turned on and are using a dialup modem (such as the Apple internal modem) in Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.4.2, you may experience a kernel panic. During a kernel panic, you will see a message that says you need to restart your computer.

To resolve the issue, you should update to Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.

If you cannot update immediately, the workaround is to deselect the "Use TCP header compression" modem option as follows:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
  2. Click Network.
  3. From the Show pop-up menu, choose Internal Modem (or other modem if you're not using the Apple internal modem).
  4. Click the PPP Options button.
  5. Deselect the "Use TCP header compression" checkbox.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Apply Now.
  8. Quit System Preferences.
