Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Kernel panic when using Internet Sharing with a dialup connection
Products Affected
Mac OS X 10.4
If you have Internet Sharing turned on and are using a dialup modem (such as the Apple internal modem) in Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.4.2, you may experience a kernel panic. During a kernel panic, you will see a message that says you need to restart your computer.
To resolve the issue, you should update to Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.
If you cannot update immediately, the workaround is to deselect the "Use TCP header compression" modem option as follows:
- From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
- Click Network.
- From the Show pop-up menu, choose Internal Modem (or other modem if you're not using the Apple internal modem).
- Click the PPP Options button.
- Deselect the "Use TCP header compression" checkbox.
- Click OK.
- Click Apply Now.
- Quit System Preferences.
