If your display doesn’t look right

Here are some tips that could help you if the image on your display doesn’t look right.

If your display doesn’t look right, try the following:

  • Make sure your computer is not asleep. Press the Space bar or any other key to see if the computer wakes.

  • Make sure the display and computer are turned on.

  • Make sure the cables are connected properly to your computer and the display.

  • If the display is garbled, make sure your computer has detected that display. In Displays preferences, click Display and then click Detect Displays.

    If this doesn’t appear to make a difference, try restarting your computer.

  • If the display is black or dim, try adjusting the brightness.

    If you have a computer with ambient light sensing, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click the Displays icon, and then click the Display tab. Select the option to turn on ambient light sensing. The display automatically adjusts its brightness to match the current lighting level.

  • If the colors on your display don’t look right, try calibrating the display.

  • If the display is flickering, you may be experiencing interference from a nearby power line, a fluorescent light, a radio, a microwave oven, another computer, or another electrical device. Try relocating nearby electrical devices or moving your computer and display.

  • If you see bright or dark spots on a flat-panel or portable computer screen, your display may have some pixel anomalies. If you suspect your display contains a high number of anomalies, take your Apple product to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Read the manuals that came with your computer and your display for further troubleshooting tips.

If you have an Apple display and can’t correct the problem, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for more help. Don’t attempt to repair the display yourself, because any damage you may cause is not covered under your warranty.
