Export a movie in another format using QuickTime Player

With QuickTime Player, you can export a movie in another format. To get started, open your movie in QuickTime Player.

Open and play movies in QuickTime Player

  1. In QuickTime Player, choose File > Export.
  2. In the dialog that appears, enter a filename for the exported movie and choose a location for the file.
  3. Choose an option from the Format menu.

    The resolutions and data rates listed for each export option are the maximum possible resolutions and data rates. The exact resolution and data rate of an exported movie varies depending on the characteristics of the original movie.

    • 480p: Creates a copy of the movie using 3 Mbit/s H.264 with up to a 640 x 480 resolution. Movies created using this option are suited for a Mac or PC.

    • 720p: Creates a copy of the movie using 7.5 Mbit/s H.264 with up to a 1280 x 720 resolution. Movies created using this option are suited for a Mac or PC.

    • 1080p: Creates a copy of the movie using 10 Mbit/s H.264 with up to a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Movies created using this option are suited for a Mac or PC.

    • iPod Touch (3rd generation) & iPhone 3GS: Creates a 480p copy of the movie that is suited for iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (3rd generation) using 3.0 Mbit/s H.264. MPEG video files created using this option are also compatible with iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and PC.

    • iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV: Creates a 720p copy of the movie that is suited for iPod touch (4th generation), iPhone 4, iPad, and Apple TV (2nd generation) using 7 Mbit/s H.264. MPEG video files created using this option are also compatible with Mac and PC.

    • Additional export options are available for earlier models of iPhone, iPod, and Apple TV. To see the additional options, hold down the Option key and click the Format menu.

      iPod & iPhone: Creates a copy of the movie that is suited for iPod and iPhone using 1.5 Mbit/s H.264. MPEG video files created using this option are also compatible with iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and PC.

      Apple TV: Creates a copy of the movie that is suited for Apple TV (1st generation) using 5 Mbit/s H.264. MPEG video files created using this option are also compatible with iPad, Apple TV (2nd generation), Mac, and PC.

  4. Click Export.
