Address Book 6.x: Archive your address book

This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.
Archive your address book

You can archive your address book before making extensive changes to it, such as importing new addresses or reorganizing groups. Archiving is also an easy way to create a backup copy of your address book, or to move your address book to another computer.

  1. Choose File > Export > Address Book Archive.
  2. Specify a name for the archive file and select where you want to export the file.

To further safeguard your address book archive, copy the file to an external hard drive.

If you have made inadvertent changes to your address book, you can import an archive file. If there are new or changed cards you don’t want to lose when you import the archive file, export those cards as vCards first (and then import them after you import the archive file).
