Transfer your address book from a Windows computer

Your Mac comes with Address Book, an application that lets conveniently store contact information for your family, friends, and colleagues. You can transfer your contacts from a Windows computer to a Mac and use them with Address Book. The easiest way to transfer items is to use Migration Assistant.

Transfer your information from a Mac, PC, or disk

If you prefer to use a DVD, external disk, or network connection to transfer information, follow the steps below for your type of address book application.

From Outlook Express

  1. On the Windows computer, create a folder to hold your exported addresses.
  2. Open Outlook Express.
  3. Choose Tools > Address Book.
  4. Choose Edit > Select All.
  5. Drag the selected addresses to the folder you created.
  6. Transfer the folder of addresses to your Mac. For suggested ways to transfer the folder, see:

  7. On the Mac, open Address Book in the Applications folder.
  8. Choose File > Import.
  9. Select the addresses you’re importing, and click Open.

From other applications

  1. On your Windows computer, use the email or address book application to export your contact information to one of these formats: vCard, LDIF, or text (tab-delimited and comma-separated) files.
  2. Transfer the files from your Windows computer to your Mac. For suggested ways to transfer the files, see:

  3. On the Mac, open Address Book in the Applications folder.
  4. Choose File > Import.
  5. Select the addresses you’re importing, and click Open.
