Select and edit text

You can select any portion of text within a text box or shape to change its style or edit its content.

Place the text insertion point in a line of text:

  1. Do either of the following:

    • Tap a line of text.

    • Double-tap a shape or text box to select a word within it.

  2. To reposition the insertion point, touch and hold within a line of text until a magnifying glass appears.

    If you’ve got a word, paragraph, or multiple paragraphs selected, swipe to deselect them, and then move the insertion point.

  3. Drag your finger over the text until the magnifying glass shows you that the insertion point is where you want it, and then lift your finger.

  4. To move the insertion point, do any of the following:

    • Swipe left or right with one finger to move the insertion point one character to the left or right.

    • Swipe left with two fingers to move the insertion point to the beginning of the current word, or to the beginning of the previous word.

    • Swipe right with two fingers to move the insertion point to the end of the current word, or to the end of the next word.

    • Swipe left or right with three fingers to move the insertion point to the beginning or end of the current line.

When you swipe to move the insertion point, it moves in the direction that you swipe. For more details about using gestures on your mobile device, see Touchscreen basics for Pages.

You can’t place the insertion point in placeholder text. When you tap placeholder text, the entire block of text is selected and is replaced when you begin typing.

Select words or paragraphs:

  • Double-tap the word you want to select.

  • Triple-tap or tap simultaneously with two fingers the paragraph you want to select.

  • Double-tap a word, and then drag the drag points Image of drag points to encompass the range you want to to select, including whole or partial words.

  • Double-tap to select a word, and then drag the drag points Image of drag points beyond the edge of the current paragraph.

    The selection changes to contain the entire paragraph and its associated formatting marks (“invisibles”). You can drag the drag points up or down to include paragraphs or exclude paragraphs from the current selection.

  • In a rapid motion, tap a word and then touch and drag to encompass the range you want to select, including whole or partial words and paragraphs.

Copy and paste text:

  1. Select the text you want to copy.

  2. Tap Copy.

    If you select a word to copy that doesn’t have a recognized spelling, you may first see spelling suggestions or the message “No Replacements Found.” Tap the word again to see the Copy button.

  3. Place the insertion point or select some text where you want to paste the copied text.

  4. Tap Paste.
