Add, remove, resize, and rearrange table rows and columns

To work with table columns and rows, you must first select one or more cells.

Select entire rows or columns:

With some part of the table selected, do the following:

Tap the gray bar to the left of the row or above the column you want to select. This selects the entire row or column.

To extend the selection, drag the selection handles to encompass additional rows or columns.

Add or remove table columns:

With some part of the table selected, do any of the following:

  • To add more columns on the right side of the table, drag Column Resizing handle to the right.

  • To delete excess empty columns on the right side of the table, drag Column Resizing handle to the left.

  • To add a column anywhere in the table, select a column, and then tap Insert. A column is added to the left of the column you selected.

  • To delete a column anywhere in the table, select it, and then tap Delete.

  • To delete a range of columns, select the columns and then tap Delete.

Add or remove table rows:

With some part of the table selected, do any of the following:

  • To add more rows at the bottom of the table, drag Column Resizing handle downward.

  • To delete excess empty rows at the bottom of the table, drag Column Resizing handle upward.

  • To add a row anywhere in the table, select a row, and then tap Insert. A row is inserted above the row you selected.

    If you’re adding a row to the bottom of the table, tap an option to specify whether you want it to be a body row or a footer row.

  • To delete a row anywhere in the table, select it, and then tap Delete.

  • To delete a range of rows, select the rows and then tap Delete.

Move rows or columns:

With some part of the table selected, do the following:

  1. Select the row or column you want to move.

    Tap the gray bar to the left of the row or above the column you want to select. This selects the entire row or column.

  2. Touch and hold the blue part of the bar adjacent to the selected row or column, and then drag it to a new position in the table.

Resize rows or columns:

With some part of the table selected, do the following:

  1. Select the row or column you want to resize.

    Tap the gray bar to the left of the row or above the column you want to select. This selects the entire row or column.

  2. Do either or both of the following:

    • To resize a column, drag the right edge of the blue bar above a selected column to the right.

    • To resize a row, drag the bottom edge of the blue bar on the left of a selected row downward.

Unhide all rows and columns:

If you imported a table into Numbers that contains hidden rows and columns, you can unhide (show) them.

  1. Tap the table with the hidden rows or columns, and then tap Table handle.

  2. Tap Show All.
