iMovie '11: aspect ratio

aspect ratio

An aspect ratio is the ratio of an image’s width to its height.

In iMovie, you must choose one of two possible aspect ratios for all of your projects:

  • Widescreen (16:9):
Makes the movie appear much wider than it is high. Choose this option if you’ll be viewing your movie on a widescreen computer displays or a high-definition TV (HDTV). When viewed on a standard-definition television or computer display, the movie appears with black areas above and below. This view is sometimes referred to as “letterbox.”
  • Standard (4:3):
Makes the movie more square in shape. Choose this option if you’ll be viewing your movie on a standard-definition TV or computer monitor. When viewed on an HDTV, the movie appears with black areas on the left and right. This view is sometimes referred to as “pillarbox.”
