iTunes 10 for Mac: Buy items from the iTunes Store

Buy items from the iTunes Store

To purchase items in the iTunes Store, you simply click the Buy button for the item you want. The item is charged to your account and downloaded to your iTunes library.

Important:   All sales are final. You can’t cancel a purchase after you click Buy or Buy Now.

To enter the store, click iTunes Store (below Store).

To buy music and movies:

  1. In the iTunes Store, click Music or Movies at the top of the iTunes Store window.

  2. Browse or search for a song, album, music video, or movie.

For some items you can hear or watch a preview before you buy by double-clicking the title or clicking the Preview button for the item.

  3. When you find an item you want to purchase, click Buy.

To buy TV shows:

You can buy TV shows by the episode, or you can purchase entire seasons. To buy the upcoming season of a show, or a season in progress, you can purchase a Season Pass or Multi-Pass and have new episodes downloaded as they become available.

  1. In the iTunes Store, click TV Shows at the top of the iTunes Store window.

  2. Browse or search for a TV show.

  3. When you find a TV show you want to purchase, do one of the following:

    • To buy one episode, click the episode’s Buy button on the show’s page in the iTunes Store.

    • To purchase all episodes for the current season, click Buy All Episodes. This option doesn’t purchase new episodes when they become available, and isn’t available for all TV shows.

    • To buy multiple episodes at a discount (available for some shows), you can purchase a Season Pass or a Multi-Pass.

      • Season Pass: To purchase all episodes of the current season, including episodes that haven’t yet been broadcast, click Buy Season Pass. All currently available episodes are downloaded to iTunes on your computer. As soon as a new episode is available, you’re notified by email and the episode is added to your download queue. (For shows whose seasons are complete, click Buy Season to purchase and download all episodes.)

      • Multi-Pass: Designed for shows that don’t have traditional “seasons” (for example, news programs), the Multi-Pass purchases a set number of episodes. When you buy this pass, the latest episode is downloaded to your computer. As soon as each remaining episode is available, you’re notified by email and the episode is added to your download queue.

    • To turn email notification on or off, choose Store > View My Account, log in, and then click Manage Passes.

    • To make sure you have the latest episodes, choose Store > “Check for Available Downloads.”

Important:   If you buy a season pass and then buy an individual episode, you’re charged again for the episode. If you see that an episode is available but it hasn’t yet been downloaded to your computer, choose Store > “Check for Available Downloads.”

Some shows in the iTunes Store are available for purchase in HD format. When you buy an HD TV show, iTunes downloads both HD and standard-definition files, so you can also watch the show on your iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. When you sync the show to your iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, iTunes automatically transfers the correct file. To watch the show on your computer in standard definition, choose iTunes > Preferences, click Playback, and then select “Play videos using standard definition version.”

Many shows are available for download and purchase the day after they air; some shows may not be available for a few days. TV shows and passes aren’t available in all countries.

To buy apps for iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad:

You can download mobile apps and sync them to your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. You can use the apps only on your device, not on your computer. Some apps might not work on all devices.

  1. In the iTunes Store, click the App Store button at the top of the window.

  2. Browse or search for an app.

  3. To download an app, click Buy App (if it’s a free app, click Get App).

For more information, see the documentation that came with your device.

To buy books and audiobooks:

You can purchase and download books and audiobooks from the iTunes Store. Many books in the iTunes Store are free.

You can read books only by syncing them to your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad, and using the free iBooks app (available from the App Store). You can listen to audiobooks on your computer or your device.

  1. In the iTunes Store, click Books at the top of the iTunes Store window.

  2. Browse or search for the book or audiobook you want. You can search by title, author, subject, or keyword.

To download a sample of a book to a device associated with the Apple ID you use in the iTunes Store, click Get Sample. The sample is downloaded to your device only, not your computer.

  3. To purchase a book or audiobook, click the Buy button. To download a free book, click Download.

Downloaded books and audiobooks are added to Books (below Library).

Spoken program files purchased from the iTunes Store end in “.m4b.”

To buy games for iPod classic or iPod nano:

If you have an iPod that can display video, you can purchase games for your iPod from the iTunes Store.

  1. At the top of the iTunes Store window, move the pointer over the App Store button and click the arrow that appears to the right of the button.

  2. Choose iPod Click Wheel Games from the menu that appears.

  3. Browse or search for a game.

  4. To buy a game, click the game, and click Buy Game on the game’s page.

To transfer the game to your iPod, connect your iPod to your computer. iTunes automatically syncs games to your iPod.

You can play the games only on your iPod (not on your computer).

Important:   You can’t burn video content purchased from the iTunes Store to DVD.

If you quit iTunes or restart your computer before a purchase finishes downloading, the download should resume the next time you open iTunes. If it doesn’t, choose Store > “Check for Available Downloads.”

Some items in the iTunes Store may not be available in all countries.

Note:   If the iTunes Store is disabled in Parental Control preferences, it won’t appear in the iTunes window unless you also selected “Allow access to iTunes U.”
