Mail (Mavericks): Use Smart Mailboxes

Use Smart Mailboxes

A Smart Mailbox shows in one location messages that are stored in other mailboxes, based on criteria you define. For example, you might define a Smart Mailbox to show all messages from a specific sender.

Do any of the following:
Option Description
Display Smart Mailboxes: Move the pointer over the Smart Mailboxes section (shown only if you have Smart Mailboxes) in the sidebar, then click Show. Mail provides a default Smart Mailbox named Today, which shows messages viewed during the current day.
Create a Smart Mailbox: Choose Mailbox > New Smart Mailbox. Use the pop-up menus and text fields to define the search criteria for the mailbox. You can also save a search, which is saved as a Smart Mailbox.
Copy a Smart Mailbox: Choose Mailbox > Duplicate Smart Mailbox.
Edit a Smart Mailbox: Choose Mailbox > Edit Smart Mailbox, then change the criteria.
Organize Smart Mailboxes in folders: Choose Mailbox > New Smart Mailbox Folder, enter a name, then click OK. When you view a Smart Mailbox folder, the messages in all the Smart Mailboxes it contains are shown.

If you change a message in a Smart Mailbox, such as marking the message as read or unread, or moving or deleting the message, the change is also reflected in the mailbox where the message is actually stored.

If you use iCloud Documents & Data, your Smart Mailboxes are available on your other Mac computers (with OS X v10.8 or later) that have iCloud Documents & Data turned on.
