Listen to Internet radio

You can use iTunes to listen to music streamed live over the Internet.

iTunes can play many types of audio files available on the Internet, including spoken programs. You can set iTunes to open and play a file automatically whenever you play or download one from the Internet, or open an audio file from Windows Explorer (as long as iTunes can open that type of file).

For information on file types iTunes can play, see Choose import settings.

To tune in to Internet radio stations:

  1. In iTunes, click Radio Radio icon (below Library).

  2. To see the available stations, click the triangle next to the type of music you want to listen to.

  3. To tune in, double-click a station.

To connect to an Internet broadcast:

  1. Choose Advanced > Open Audio Stream.

  2. Enter the full URL of the file you want to listen to. For example:

    http://www.apple.com/itunes/sample.mp3

If you use Windows XP:

  1. Choose Edit > Preferences.

  2. Click Advanced.

  3. Click the Set button next to “Use iTunes as the default player for audio files.”

If you use Windows 7 or Windows Vista:

  1. Choose Start > Default Programs.

  2. Click “Set your default programs.”

  3. In the list on the left, click iTunes.

  4. Click “Set this program as default.”

Even if iTunes isn’t your default audio player, you can play any audio file using iTunes by right-clicking the file and choosing Open With iTunes.

You can’t record or save a song from a radio broadcast, but you can add your favorite stations to your library or to a playlist so that you can tune in easily.

If you use a dial-up modem to connect to the Internet, choose a station with a bit rate of less than 48 kilobits per second (kbps) for best results. You can also choose Edit > Preferences, click Advanced, and choose Large from the Streaming Buffer Size pop-up menu.
