Text pane of Keyboard preferences

Set options for replacing words or phrases, spelling corrections, and smart quotes and dashes.

Option Description

Replace list, With list

The Replace list shows words or phrases you want to have replaced when you type them, and the With list shows the words or phrases that will be used as the replacements. To change a word or phrase, click it in a list, then type a new word or phrase.

Add (+) and Remove (-)

Add or remove words or phrases from the lists.

Correct spelling automatically

Enable automatic spelling corrections in any app that supports it.

You can change the setting for this option in an app by choosing the command from the app’s Edit > Spelling and Grammar menu.

Spelling

The languages used to check spelling. To set up which languages are used, choose Set Up from the pop-up menu. To ensure spelling is checked accurately in any language, make sure “Automatic by Language” is selected.

Use smart quotes and dashes

Enable typographical quotes and dashes, using the selected styles, in any app that supports them.

You can change the setting for this option in an app by choosing the command from the app’s Edit > Substitutions menu.
