OS X Mavericks: Desktop preferences

Desktop preferences

Use the Desktop pane of Desktop & Screen Saver preferences to change the desktop (the background area of your screen) to a different pattern, color, or picture.

Option Description

List of images and pictures

Select a folder or set of iPhoto pictures from the list on the left, then click a pattern or picture in the box on the right.

Selecting the Pictures folder works only if you have pictures in your Pictures folder. The pictures should all have the same file format—JPEG, PICT, TIFF, or PNG. To change a picture’s format, open it in Preview, then save it in the new format. (To open Preview, click Launchpad in the Dock, then click the Preview icon.) If pictures look fuzzy, try using larger ones, such as 1024 x 768 pixels.

Add (+) and Remove (-)

To use an image from a folder other than the Pictures folder, click Add (+), then select the folder you want. The folder is added to the list, and you can choose a picture from it. To remove a folder you added, select it, then click Remove (-).

Change picture

If you can’t settle on one picture, select this checkbox, then choose how frequently the picture should change. This option may affect the performance of some apps, such as games, that use many graphics.

Random order

Display pictures randomly.

Translucent menu bar (not available on all computers)

Make the desktop color or picture visible behind the menu bar along the top of the screen.
