OS X Mountain Lion: Change your computer’s sound output device

Change your computer’s sound output device

You can choose to hear sound played through your computer’s built-in speakers, through your display’s built-in speakers, or through external speakers, headphones, or stereo equipment that you connect to your computer.

  1. If you want to use an external device, make sure the device is properly connected to your computer.
  2. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, and then click Output.

If you’re using external speakers, headphones, or stereo equipment that is connected to your computer, and your computer has only one audio port, choose Sound Output from the “Use audio port for” menu.

  3. Select the device you want to hear sound through.
    • To listen through your computer’s built-in speakers, select Internal Speakers.

    • To listen through your display’s built-in speakers, select Display Audio.

    • To listen to external speakers or headphones that are connected to the headphone jack, select Headphones.

    • To listen through external USB speakers, select your speakers from the list.

    • To listen through an audio interface made by another manufacturer, select it in the list.
