Troubleshoot a USB printer

If you can’t print to a printer connected to your computer’s USB port, first try the suggestions in this help topic:

Make sure your computer recognizes the printer

Open System Information, and then click USB.

If the printer appears but does not work, the problem might be with the printer. Review the printer’s documentation for further troubleshooting steps.

If the printer doesn’t appear, make sure it’s properly connected to your computer’s USB port.

Check your device’s USB connection

Check with the computer’s administrator

If you’re not an administrator for the computer, check with someone who is to make sure you’re in the list of people who can use the printer.

Use the best software for your printer

Make sure you have the latest version of the software for your printer. If you still have problems, try different printer software for your printer.

Change or update printer software

Replace a corrupted printer queue

If none of the previous solutions work, the printer’s queue may be corrupted.
