OS X Mountain Lion: Full keyboard access

Full keyboard access

You can use your keyboard to perform many of the same actions you perform using the mouse, such as navigating to or selecting menus, icons, and items in windows and dialogs. With full keyboard access, you use the Tab key and arrow keys to navigate to items on the screen, and the Space bar to select an item.

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Keyboard.
  2. Click Keyboard Shortcuts.
  3. To navigate only to text boxes and lists on the screen, select “Text boxes and lists only.” To navigate to all controls on the screen, select “All controls.”

You can also use VoiceOver, the spoken interface in OS X, to navigate to, control, and hear every control and item on the screen.
