Apple ID: About SMS and two-step verification

Learn how SMS works with two-step verification.

When you sign up for two-step verification for your Apple ID, you can choose an SMS-capable phone number to receive text messages that provide the temporary verification codes Apple uses to verify your identity.

Note: Apple recommends that you have at least one verified SMS-capable phone number.

Adding or removing SMS numbers

Follow these steps to add or remove an SMS-capable number from your account.

  1. Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
  2. Select “Manage your Apple ID,” then sign in.
  3. Select “Password and Security."
  4. In the Trusted Devices section, select Manage.
  5. To add a number, select “Add an SMS-capable phone number."
  6. To remove a number, select Remove next to the verified phone number associated with your Apple ID.
