iBooks: How highlights and bookmarks are migrated when you update a book

When you open a new version of a book, iBooks will try to migrate your highlights, notes, and bookmarks to the new version.

When possible, iBooks will attempt to match your existing highlights, notes, and bookmarks to their new positions within the updated book.

Highlights and notes

  • If the passage you have highlighted has not been edited, and is still contained within the original section, iBooks will preserve your highlight (and note, if entered) on the page, even if the section has been moved to a different part of the book.
  • If the passage you have highlighted has not been edited, but has been moved to a different section within the same chapter, iBooks may be unable to display the highlight on the page, but it can still be found in the Notes View. Check at the end of the chapter in an "Old Notes" section.
  • If the section containing the highlight is no longer in the book, iBooks will be unable to display the highlight on the page, but it can still be found in the Notes View. Check at the end of the chapter list for an "Old Notes" section.
  • If the passage you have highlighted has been edited or deleted in the new version of the book, iBooks will be unable to display the highlight on the page. When in Notes View, the highlight will be moved to an "Old Notes" section at the end of the chapter if the original chapter is still present in the book, or the highlight will be moved to an "Old Notes" section at the end of the book if the original chapter is no longer in the book.

Bookmarks

  • If the page you bookmarked is still in the same section in the updated book, the bookmark will be preserved, regardless of the new page number.
  • If the page you bookmarked is now in a different section or chapter, the bookmark will be discarded.
  • If the page you bookmarked has been edited, or pages preceding it have been edited, a reasonable estimate will be used to update it. If similar text from the page can be identified, the bookmark will be located with the text, with a preference for keeping the bookmark at roughly the same distance into the edited section.

Using multiple iPads

If you have multiple iPads with different versions of the same book using iBooks 3.0 and you are syncing your notes to the cloud:

  • When you open the new version, highlights and bookmarks are migrated from the old version to the new version, if possible.
  • When you open the old version after the notes have been updated for the new version on another iPad:
    • You can still view existing highlights and bookmarks, but adding new ones is disabled, and newer annotations on other devices will not be imported into the old version.
    • An alert displays letting you know a new version is available.
    • When you update the book, you will see your highlights in the new version.
