OS X Mountain Lion: Prompted for access to contacts when opening an application

Learn about the Mountain Lion feature in which it will ask for access to your contacts when opening certain applications.

When opening an application that can access your personal contact database, you may receive an alert that the application "would like access to your contacts", similar to this:

This message means an application wants to access your data in the Contacts application so it can provide additional services to you.

  • Click "Don't Allow" if you do not want the application to access to your contact data.
  • Click "OK" to allow the application access to your contact database.

The next time you open an application that attempts access to your contacts, you won't receive this alert again. If you change your mind and would like to be prompted again, go to the next section.

Managing the privacy of your contact data

You can use the Security & Privacy pane in System Preferences. Choose Apple () > System Preferences. Click Security & Privacy, then the Privacy tab. Click the lock icon to lock is necessary, and enter your admin password.

Select Contacts and check or uncheck the application for which you wish to adjust permissions.
