iOS: About the Podcasts app for iOS

With the Podcasts app for iOS, you can discover, subscribe to, and play your favorite podcasts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

To install the Podcasts app, you must have an iOS device with iOS 7 or later installed. If your device can't update to iOS 7, you may be able to download a previous version of the Podcasts app.

Stream podcasts

To stream1 a podcast, tap the episode title from the Featured tab or Top Charts.

Download podcasts

Tap the download arrow to download a podcast episode to your device.

Subscribe to podcasts

To subscribe to a podcast on your device, tap the Subscribe button from the podcast provider's page in the Podcasts store. Turn on subscription syncing to keep your subscription up-to-date across your iOS devices, Apple TV (2nd generation or later), and iTunes 11.1.1 or later:

  • From your device's home screen, tap Settings > Podcasts and turn on Sync Subscriptions.
  • In iTunes 11.1.1, choose iTunes > Preferences. On the Store tab, select "Sync podcast subscriptions and settings."

You can subscribe to authenticated podcasts, such as paid podcast subscriptions, by typing the podcast's URL in the search field from My Podcasts. You can also subscribe to an authenticated podcast by tapping its URL from Safari or another application or browser.

Note: You must sign in using the same Apple ID on your other iOS devices for your subscriptions to sync. You must have iOS 7 or later and Apple TV software 6.0 or later to use subscription syncing.

Search for podcasts

To search your local podcast library, swipe down from My Podcasts. To search the Podcasts Store, tap the Search button in the navigation bar.

Show and hide older podcast episodes

You can choose which podcast episodes show in your podcast subscription. To show or hide episodes:

  1. Tap the desired podcast subscription from My Podcasts.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the episode list and tap Add Old Episodes.
  3. Choose which episodes to show from your podcast subscription.

Note: Episodes that are dimmed have already been downloaded or added to your device.

Delete a podcast or podcast episode

To delete an entire podcast, tap Edit from the My Podcasts screen and tap X to delete the podcast. To delete an individual podcast episode:

  1. Tap the desired podcast from the My Podcasts screen.
  2. Swipe left on a podcast episode.
  3. Tap Delete.

Use Auto Download

With Auto Download, you can automatically download new podcast episodes in the background as they become available:

  1. After you subscribe to a podcast, navigate to My Podcasts.
  2. Tap the podcast to bring up the podcast details.
  3. Tap Settings > Auto-Downloads.

Set Podcast Refresh intervals

The Podcasts app will check for new episodes every six hours. You can adjust how often these checks occur by tapping Settings > Refresh Podcast within the podcast details.

Adjust playback speed

To adjust the playback speed of your audio or video podcast, tap the Speed Selector button on the Now Playing screen.

Use Auto Play

With Auto Play, you can continue listening to new podcast episodes without you interacting with the Podcasts app. When an episode reaches its end, Auto Play will play the next unplayed episode. Once the most recent episode has played to the end, playback will stop.

Use Playback Sync

With Playback Sync, you can automatically sync your playback position to all of your iOS devices that use the Podcasts app and your Apple ID. To sync your playback position, you must sign in to the iTunes Store using the same Apple ID on all your iOS devices.

Set the sleep timer

If you set a sleep timer, you can play podcast episodes for a limited time and then stop. To set the sleep timer for audio podcasts, tap the Sleep Timer button on the Now Playing screen.

Share a podcast

You can share episodes and podcasts with friends via email, Messages, Twitter, or Facebook. To share with a friend, tap on the podcast from My Podcasts. Tap the Share button to the right of Settings, and choose how you'd like to share with your friends. To share using Facebook, you must have iOS 6 or later installed on your device.

Use iTunes Playlist Syncing

Playlists with podcasts appear within the Podcasts app.

Note: iTunes Playlist syncing isn't compatible with iTunes Match.

Use On-The-Go

On-The-Go works like a playlist in iTunes. With On-The-Go, you can add individual podcast episodes. To edit your On-The-Go station, tap My Stations > On-The-Go.

  • Tap Add to add new podcast episodes or Edit to remove individual episodes.
  • Tap Clear to remove all episodes.

Use My stations

When you subscribe to a podcast, the most recent episode of that podcast will be queued to play on your station. You can also create new customized stations. You can choose which podcast episodes to add to your station or choose to add only audio or video podcasts or both. You can also designate the playback order by episode or by podcast.

Create a new station

To create a new station, follow these steps:

  1. Tap My Stations > New Station.
  2. Enter a name for your new station and click Save.
  3. Choose which podcasts you would like to add to your station and tap Done.
  4. On the next screen, tap Settings to customize your new station.
