This article provides important information about how to successfully move from MobileMe to iCloud. Please read the information below and when you are ready to move your MobileMe account to iCloud, visit me.com/move.
Important: Verify that your contacts and bookmarks are completely up to date on at least one device you plan to use with iCloud. They will be uploaded to iCloud from your devices after you move. iCloud will not copy any contacts or bookmarks directly from me.com.
Preparing to move
System Requirements
Before moving to iCloud, make sure all devices and computers you use with iCloud meet these requirements:
- iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch must have iOS 5 or later. Note: When you are asked to provide your Apple ID during iOS setup, use your MobileMe email address and password. To use a different Apple ID for iTunes and iCloud, just go to Settings > Store on your iOS device after you've finished the iOS setup assistant. Learn more about using multiple Apple IDs.
- Macs must have OS X Lion 10.7.2 or later.
- PCs must have Windows 7 or Vista (Service Pack 2) and the iCloud Control Panel. Outlook 2007 or 2010 are required for accessing iCloud Contacts and Calendars.
For more details, see the iCloud system requirements. If your device or computer doesn't meet system requirements and you want to move to iCloud, see this article for more information.
Backing up your data
Prior to moving from MobileMe to iCloud, you should back up your contacts, calendars, and bookmarks.
Important: Verify that your contacts and bookmarks are completely up to date on at least one device you plan to use with iCloud. They will be uploaded to iCloud from your devices after you move. iCloud will not copy any contacts or bookmarks directly from me.com.
Family Pack Master Accounts
iCloud does not have Family Pack accounts. When you move to iCloud, your family members will continue to get their MobileMe service through June 30, 2012. They can move to iCloud individually when they are ready.
Once you move to iCloud, you will no longer be able to manage or create additional family member accounts. If you want to add or delete any accounts, do so in MobileMe Account before you move to iCloud.
Inactive or expired MobileMe accounts
Inactive and expired MobileMe accounts do not need to move to iCloud. Simply use your inactive or expired account to sign up for an iCloud account and follow the onscreen instructions. See this article for more information.
Moving Mail, Calendars, Contacts, and Bookmarks
- When you move from MobileMe to iCloud, your active email addresses (@me.com, @mac.com, and all your aliases) move with you, along with all of your messages, mailboxes, and rules.
- After moving to iCloud, the mail application you use to read your email must support accessing email via IMAP over SSL (such as OS X Mail or Outlook 2007 and 2010).
- After moving to iCloud, the following webmail features will no longer work:
- Checking external POP email accounts.
- Using a Send From address to send from a non @me.com or @mac.com email address.
Calendars
- When you move from MobileMe to iCloud your Calendar data is moved for you. Your devices are automatically configured with your iCloud account information so that you can view your calendars on your devices without any additional configuration. This only works if you are using the new MobileMe Calendar before moving to iCloud. You can confirm you are using the new MobileMe Calendar by signing in to me.com/calendar. If you can see your calendars and events, you are using the new MobileMe calendar.
- If you were not using the new MobileMe Calendar prior to moving to iCloud, you should turn off calendar syncing on all iOS devices and choose to keep the calendar data on your device. Not doing so may result in the loss of your calendar data on your iOS device after moving to iCloud. To turn off Calendar on your iOS device: Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > MobileMe. Turn off Calendars and choose the option to keep data on your device.
- If you have any shared calendars (either as sharer or participant), they will be affected as follows when you move to iCloud:
- Privately shared calendars (such as a family calendar):
- Sharing settings and calendar data will be preserved when moving, but the people you are sharing with must also move to iCloud in order to see your shared calendar(s).
- If someone is sharing a calendar with you and you move to iCloud, you will no longer be able to see that calendar until the person who is sharing the calendar with you also moves to iCloud.
- Publicly shared calendars (such as a soccer team schedule):
- If you are sharing a calendar publicly, it will be unpublished as part of your move to iCloud. You will need to share your calendar again after moving to iCloud.
- Privately shared calendars (such as a family calendar):
Contacts and Bookmarks
Important: Your Contacts and Bookmarks data must be on one or more of your supported devices prior to moving to iCloud. You will lose access to any data that is only stored on me.com after moving to iCloud. The only way to move your MobileMe Bookmarks and Contacts to iCloud is to have them up-to-date and available on one or more of your supported devices at the time you initiate a move to iCloud. You should not move to iCloud if your Contacts are only available at me.com and you want to retain them.
Storage
When you move from MobileMe to iCloud, you keep all the storage in your MobileMe account for as long as you keep your MobileMe account active (or until June 30, 2012). However, since your mail is now in iCloud, your MobileMe storage is allocated entirely to your MobileMe iDisk.
In addition, most users who move from MobileMe to iCloud will get a complimentary iCloud storage upgrade through September 30, 2012. See the chart below for the most common cases.
| MobileMe Account Type | MobileMe Storage | iCloud Storage through September 30, 2012 |
| MobileMe individual or Family Pack master account | 20 GB | 25 GB |
| MobileMe Account with additional purchased storage | 40 GB - 60 GB | 55 GB |
|
Family Pack member accounts |
5 GB | 5 GB |
After September 30, 2012, you can purchase the upgrade at the regular price, or let it expire and use the free 5 GB plan.* To view or manage your storage, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup on your iOS device. For more help with iCloud Storage upgrades, see this article.
*iCloud comes with 5 GB of free storage for Mail, Documents & Data, and Backup. Your purchased music, apps, books, TV shows, and movies, as well as the photos in your Photo Stream do not count against your iCloud storage.
