iTunes Store: How to subscribe to iTunes Match
Summary
iTunes Match is a feature of iTunes in the Cloud that allows you to access your personal music library from any authorized computer with iTunes 10.5.1 or later installed or any iOS 5.0.1 or later device with an active Internet connection. iTunes Match requires an annual subscription of $24.99 a year. Your subscription will automatically renew at the end of your subscription. Once you have subscribed to iTunes Match and matched or uploaded your eligible music, you will be able to access your music in iCloud directly from within your iTunes Music library, or the Music Player app on your iOS 5 device.

Like Automatic Downloads, when you subscribe to or enable iTunes Match, your device or computer will be associated with your Apple ID. Your Apple ID can have up to 10 devices and computers (combined) associated with it. For more information about associating devices and computers to an Apple ID, please see this article. Subscribing to iTunes Match must be done from a computer that meets the below system requirements.
iTunes Match minimum system requirements:
- Mac OS X v10.6.8 or later
- Windows Vista or later
- iTunes 10.5.1 or later
- iOS 5 or later on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2.
To subscribe to iTunes Match
- Launch iTunes 10.5.1 or later on your computer. You cannot subscribe to iTunes Match from an iOS device.
- Choose Store > Turn On iTunes Match.
- From the main screen, click "Subscribe for $24.99."
- If you already have an existing Apple ID that you use for iTunes Store purchases, sign in with that Apple ID and click Subscribe. Review this article if you want to use the same Apple ID for iTunes Store purchases and iCloud. Otherwise click Create Account to create an Apple ID.
- You may be asked to validate your billing information at this point.
- After you have added a valid payment method, click "Subscribe" to continue.
- Once you agree to the iTunes Match Terms and Conditions, iTunes will automatically scan your iTunes library for matches.
- A status indicator will allow you to track progress. You may also manually pause and resume iTunes at any time by clicking the Stop or Start button.
- Once iTunes has completed scanning, matching, and uploading any unmatched songs, click Done.
- The download button
will be displayed next to items that are available for download from iCloud. If the download button is not visible, this means that the item already exists locally in your iTunes library.
Note: You may use store credit to pay for your iTunes Match subscription however a valid payment method must still be on file at the time of sign up.

To turn off Auto-Renew for iTunes Match
iTunes Match will automatically renew your subscription at the end of your 1 year subscription by default. To turn off Auto-Renew:
- Launch iTunes 10.5.1 or later.
- Choose Store > Sign In.
- Enter your Apple ID and password and click Sign In.
- Choose Store > View My Account. You may be asked to re-enter your Apple ID password.
- In the "iTunes in the Cloud" section, click Turn Off Auto-Renew to the right of iTunes Match.
Note: If at any time during the matching and uploading process you lose your Internet connection or if you experience a power outage, iTunes will automatically resume where it left off the next time you open iTunes.
Additional Information
Notes
- iTunes Match is limited to 25,000 songs.
- iTunes Store purchases made with the same Apple ID being used for iTunes Match do not count towards the 25,000 song limit.
- Unmatched content will be uploaded as is; upload time varies depending on the amounts uploaded and local network speeds.
- Song files over 200 MB will not be uploaded to iCloud.
- Songs containing DRM (Digital Rights Management) will not be matched or uploaded to iCloud unless your computer is authorized for playback of that content.
About file formats
- Songs encoded in ALAC, WAV, or AIFF will be transcoded to a separate temporary AAC 256 kbps file locally, prior to uploading to iCloud. The original files will remain untouched.
- Songs encoded as AAC or MP3 that do not meet certain quality criteria will not be matched or uploaded to iCloud.
