iMovie '11: How to import a project created with iMovie on iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch

With iMovie '11 (v9.0.4 and later) on your Mac, you can import an iMovie for iOS project from your iOS device to your computer.

To import a project you created on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch:

  1. Make sure you've installed all available updates for iMovie. To check, choose Software Updates from the Apple () menu.
  2. Connect your device to your computer.
  3. On your device, in the iMovie Projects window, scroll to center the thumbnail for the project you want to import.
  4. Tap the Share button, and then tap “Send Project to iTunes.”
  5. Open iTunes on your Mac, and select the device on the left side of the iTunes window.
  6. Click Apps at the top of the iTunes window, and then tap iMovie in the Apps pane below File Sharing. The shared movie will appear on the right in the iMovie Documents pane.
  7. Drag the movie out of the pane onto your desktop, Movies folder, or another convenient location.
  8. Open iMovie on your Mac, and choose File > Import > iMovie for iOS Project.
  9. Locate and select the iOS movie you dragged out of iTunes.
  10. In the window that appears, select "Create a new Event," or add the video to an existing Event.
  11. Click Import.

Additional Information

The iMovie for iOS project retains all its audio and video edits and can now be further edited like any other iMovie project. If the iMovie for iOS project had a theme, the theme titles and transitions are retained, and you can add new ones based on this original theme. If you want to change the project’s theme, only the themes in iMovie for Mac are available. If you change to one of these themes, you can’t change back to your original iMovie for  iOS theme. If your project contained photos, these images are retained in your project but aren’t available from the iMovie Photo Browser.
