What is iTunes Ping? 

Ping lets you connect with your favorite artists and friends by name. With Ping you can share your musical discoveries with friends, comment on recent music purchases, listen to song previews that people are recommending, and find upcoming concerts in your area.

What are the system requirements to use iTunes Ping?

  • iTunes 10 or later on a PC or Mac.
  • A valid Apple ID (iTunes Store account).
  • iOS 4 or later on iPhone or iPod touch.

How do I start using iTunes Ping?

Simply open iTunes 10 on your PC or Mac and sign in to the iTunes Store. Ping is disabled by default. An iTunes Store account is required to use Ping, and the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions must be accepted before it can be enabled. Turn on Ping by clicking Ping in the iTunes Store navigation bar, or by clicking the Ping icon on the left hand side of the iTunes window under Store. You can set up a free Ping profile with basic information about yourself. Then, find people you know by entering a name or email in Find People, or by sending an email request.

What types of privacy settings are available?

When you create a Ping profile, the iTunes Store uses the full name associated with the corresponding Apple ID as the full name on the profile. If that Apple ID has been used to publish reviews on the iTunes Store, this name will also replace the account's iTunes Store Reviewer Nickname. Ping only displays the information you provide during the signup process and allows it to be published going forward.

With Ping you can select from the following privacy settings:

  • Allow people to follow me:
  • Your profile information and activity (including purchases) will be visible to everyone, and anyone can follow you. You can be found through search on Ping.

  • Require my approval to follow me:
  • Your name, photo, and where you live will be visible to everyone. Only people you approve will be able to follow you and see your complete profile information and activity (including purchases). You can be found through search on Ping.

  • Don't allow people to follow me:
  • You can follow others, but no one can follow you. Your name and photo will appear for some actions, such as writing reviews or adding comments. Activity that will expose your name or profile picture will always prompt you with an alert first. You cannot be found through search.

Can I use my iTunes nickname to post iTunes Ping comments and reviews? 

No, your Ping profile name must match the name designated in your Account Payment Information screen within iTunes. If you've previously created an iTunes nickname, it will automatically be replaced with your Ping profile name. Your Ping name appears on all of your published Customer Reviews. If you do not want your name associated with some or all of your reviews, you are welcome to remove reviews from the iTunes Store at any time. You can manage your reviews by choosing View My Account from the Store menu and clicking the Manage Reviews button. If you turn off Ping, your iTunes nickname will reappear. Please note that the iTunes Store requires that your Ping name match the name listed in your iTunes Store account information (which is your Apple ID information). Thus, when you change your Ping name, the first and last name in your Apple ID information will be updated and vice versa.

How do I report inappropriate comments or pictures?

Within Ping, you can report concerns about comments or content that you feel is inappropriate by clicking Report and describing your concern. If you are the originator of a posted event, you can remove your follower's comments.

Will my profile and comments be removed if I turn off iTunes Ping?

Yes, if you turn off Ping, your profile information and comments will be removed from Ping. If you turn Ping back on within seven days, your profile and comments will be reinstated.

How do I view iTunes Ping on my iOS 4 device?

Open iTunes on your iPhone or iPod touch (with iOS 4 or later) and tap Ping from the navigation bar. Once you are signed in, you are able to view your profile, people you follow, recent activity, Like or Comment on events, preview recommended music and make purchases, and find concerts, all within Ping.
