iOS: Apple Wireless Keyboard compatibility

Learn about the compatibility of the Apple Wireless Keyboard and third-party Bluetooth keyboards with iOS devices.

The Apple Wireless Keyboard and many Bluetooth keyboards that use the Apple keyboard layout are compatible when used with the following iOS devices:

  • iPad (all models)
  • iPhone 3GS or later
  • iPod touch (3rd generation or later)

The following Apple Wireless Keyboard models are compatible, but not all function keys designed for use on the Mac will work on iOS devices:

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard (2011): Features an aluminum case and uses two AA batteries. You can identify this model by the following icons on the F3 and F4 keys:

    Note: When using Apple Wireless Keyboard (2011) with iOS 4.3 or earlier, the function keys are limited to the Eject key. Update to iOS 5 or later to enable additional function keys.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard (2009): Features an aluminum case and uses two AA batteries. You can identify this model by the following icons on the F3 and F4 keys:
  • Apple Wireless Keyboard (2007): Features an aluminum case and uses three AA batteries.

The original Apple Wireless Keyboard, introduced in 2003, is not compatible:

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard (2003): Features a white case and uses four AA batteries.

In addition, many third-party Bluetooth keyboards that use the Apple keyboard layout are also compatible. Check with the keyboard manufacturer for additional information.
