Mac OS X v10.6: Waking a Mac from sleep via a third-party USB Bluetooth adapter

Summary

Some Intel-based Macs can be ordered without built-in Bluetooth. If you want to be able to wake your Intel-based Mac from sleep via a third-party Bluetooth adapter in Mac OS X v10.6, use a certain adapter.

Products Affected

Bluetooth, Mac OS X 10.6, Targus ACB10US adapter

Some third-party Bluetooth adapters may not allow your Mac to wake from sleep with a Apple Wireless Keyboard or Apple Wireless Mouse, including a Magic Mouse, and "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" will be dimmed in the Bluetooth preferences pane.  This is described in more detail in this article.

You can use the Targus ACB10US adapter with a Bluetooth device to wake your Mac from sleep in Mac OS X v10.6. It offers connectivity at both the 1.1 and 2.0 Bluetooth EDR specification and supports PAN, which can be useful for tethering with iPhone.
