iPhoto and Aperture: About support of sRAW images from Canon cameras

Learn about support of sRAW images with iPhoto and Aperture from Canon cameras.


Several Canon cameras offer an option to shoot images in a format called "sRAW," in addition to RAW and JPEG formats. Aperture 3 and iPhoto '09 support sRAW images.

Note: Previous versions of iPhoto and Aperture support many camera's RAW format as indicated on the Mac OS X 10.5 RAW Camera Support page, but iPhoto ’08 and Aperture 2.x (or previous versions) will not support sRAW images.

The following versions of Apple applications support sRAW images:

  • Aperture 3.0 or later.
  • iPhoto ’09 with Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.0 or later.
  • Preview with Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.0 or later.

If you try to open or import sRAW images from Canon cameras with an incompatible configuration, you may see some of the following issues:

Preview may quit unexpectedly

  • If you try to open an sRAW image in Preview, it may cause Preview to quit unexpectedly.
    Note: This issue may affect Intel-based computers using Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.

Images may not display correctly

  • If you try to open sRAW images with Preview, the images may not display correctly.
  • If you try to import sRAW images into iPhoto and Aperture, the images may not display correctly.
    Note: These issues may affect PowerPC-based or Intel-based computers using Mac OS X v10.4.11 Tiger.

iPhoto or Aperture may quit unexpectedly

  • If you've imported sRAW images into the Aperture library, Aperture may quit unexpectedly.
  • if you try to import sRAW images into iPhoto, it may quit unexpectedly when you try to edit images.
    Note: These issues may affect Intel-based computers using Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.
