Archived - PowerBook G4: How to remove or install the battery

Learn how to remove or install a battery in your PowerBook G4 (12-inch), PowerBook G4, PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet), PowerBook G4 (DVI), or PowerBook G4 (1 GHz/867 MHz).

PowerBook G4 (12-inch)

Removing the battery

  1. Shut down your computer.
    Warning: Removing the battery before shutting down your computer may result in data loss.
  2. Turn the computer over.
  3. Locate the battery release latch.
  4. Use a coin to turn the battery latch one quarter turn clockwise to unlock the battery, then gently remove it.

Installing the Replacement Battery

  1. Close the display and turn the computer over.
  2. Replace the battery, flush into the battery compartment. Use a coin to turn the latch counterclockwise one quarter turn to lock the battery into place.

To remove the battery

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Turn the computer over.
  3. Locate the battery release latch(es).

  4. Slide the latch down and gently remove the battery.

To insert the battery

  1. Insert the battery into the battery bay at an angle with the battery's LED side first.
  2. Firmly press down on the battery until the battery's latch sets.

PowerBook G4 (15-inch  FW800) through PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD)
PowerBook G4 (17-inch)
PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.33GHz)

To remove the battery

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Turn the computer over.
  3. Locate the battery release latch(es).

    Note: MacBook Pro, PowerBook G4 (17-inch), and PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.33GHz) computers have a different battery location.  Appearance of computer may vary based on model.
  4. Slide the latch down and gently remove the battery.

To insert the battery

  1. Insert the battery into the battery bay at an angle with the battery's LED side last, as seen in Figure 5.
  2. Firmly press down on the battery until the battery's latch sets.

To change the battery while the computer is asleep

If your battery runs low while you are working, you can put your computer to sleep and replace the battery with a charged one. The internal backup battery provides enough power to maintain the contents of memory (RAM) for about one minute. Note: This will not work if you are using Mac OS X v10.0.
