MobileMe: Migrating from .Mac Homepage photo pages to MobileMe Gallery

Summary

If you have old .Mac Homepages that contain pictures, while you still are able to view your pages online at http://homepage.mac.com/membername, it is recommended that you migrate your pictures to your MobileMe Gallery for the best results. This document will walk you through how to do that.

Products Affected

.Mac/iWeb website hosting, MobileMe Gallery

If my pictures are available in iPhoto '08 or later, or Aperture 2
Using iPhoto '08 or later, or Aperture 2, you can easily publish a new album to your MobileMe Gallery.

If my pictures are available on my computer
If you have copies of your pictures on your computer, but don't have Aperture 2 or iPhoto '08 or later, you can still easily create a Gallery album via MobileMe at your MobileMe Gallery. To create a new MobileMe Gallery album, refer to Creating a Gallery album using the Gallery application.

If the only copy of my pictures is my .Mac Homepage
If your pictures are not available in iPhoto '08 or later, or Aperture 2, or on your computer, locate the files on your iDisk:

  1. Go to the MobileMe login page and log in with your MobileMe membername and password. (Or, In Mac OS X, from the Finder, select Go > iDisk > My iDisk).
  2. Navigate to the Pictures folder.
  3. Open the Photo Album Pictures folder.
  4. Locate the folder that contains the pictures you wish to create a Gallery Album for. If you have a large number of Homepage Picture pages, you may have a large number of folders
  5. Download or copy the folder to your computer. For more information about downloading iDisk files refer to MobileMe iDisk Help or Mac OS X10.5 Help: Copying files to and from your iDisk.

Note: The Photo Album Pictures folder is the default location for picture files to be stored for Homepage pages. However, if you manually created the page, your photos may be located elsewhere on your iDisk.

Once you copy or download the pictures to your computer, you can publish a Gallery album using iPhoto '08 or later, Aperture 2, or via the MobileMe website.

Confirm that your Gallery album was published correctly
You can confirm your Gallery album was published correctly by visiting: http://gallery.me.com/yourmembername

Remove the previously published homepage
After confirming that your album has been successfully published, you can remove it from your previously published homepage:

  1. Visit the page, and note the website address.  For example:
    http://homepage.mac.com/membername/PhotoAlbum1.html
  2. If that is the address of the page you wish to delete, go to the MobileMe login page and log in with your MobileMe membername and password.
  3. Open the Sites folder, locate the file named PhotoAlbum1.html and delete it.

This will remove the previously published page from Homepage, but it will not remove the now unused picture files from your iDisk. To remove these:

  1. Go to the MobileMe login page and log in with your MobileMe membername and password. (Or, in Mac OS X, from the Finder, select Go > iDisk > My iDisk).
  2. Navigate to the Pictures folder.
  3. Open the Photo Album Pictures folder.
  4. Locate the folder that contains the pictures you want to delete.
  5. Delete the folder from your iDisk (if you have not already done so, you may want to copy the folder to your computer first).
