Archived - Mac OS X 10.5.5 and later: Installing optional and bundled software

Mac computers that ship with Mac OS X 10.5.5 or later allow the installation of some bundled Mac OS X applications such as Mail and/or the iLife suite--without needing to reinstall Mac OS X completely.

Each set of the Mac OS X 10.5.5 or later installation discs (bundled with the Mac) contains a different selection of software:

  • Disc 1 - "Mac OS X Install DVD": Bootable disc that lets you install Mac OS X, bundled applications such iCal and Mail, Language Translations, printer drivers, Boot Camp drivers, Xcode (Developer) Tools
  • Disc 2 - "Applications Install DVD": Bootable disc that includes Apple Hardware Test, and lets you install other bundled software such as iLife

Installing Optional Installs (via the Mac OS X Install DVD)

  1. Locate the Mac OS X Install DVD that came with your computer.
  2. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc into the optical drive. 
  3. A Mac OS X Install Disk window appears. Double-click the Optional installs folder.
  4. Double-click on the Optional Installs installer.
  5. The Optional Installs Installer screen appears. Click Continue.
  6. A software license screen appears. Click Continue, read the terms, and click Agree if you accept the terms.
  7. Select all of the items you wish to install. Click the disclosure triangle next to Applications, Language Translations, or Printer drivers to select individual items. Click Continue when ready to install.
  8. A new page will appear informing you of the space that will be used for this install and the location the software will be installed. When ready, click Install.
  9. When prompted, type your admin password to start the installation.
     

Installing Bundled applications such as iLife (via Applications Install DVD)

  1. To install the bundled applications, locate the Applications Install DVD that came with your computer.
  2. Insert the Applications Install disc into the optical drive. 
  3. An Applications Install window appears. Double-click Install Bundled Software.
  4. The Bundled Software Applications installer window appears. Click Continue.
  5. A software license screen appears. Click Continue, read the terms, and click Agree if you accept the terms.
  6. To install all the bundled applications, click Install.
    To select individual applications, click Customize. Then, click the disclosure triangle next to Bundled Applications so you can select individual applications. When ready, click Install.
    Note
    : Clicking Standard Install on the Customize screen installs all bundled applications from the disc.
  7. When prompted, type your admin password to start the installation.
