Summary

With iPhone OS 2.2 or later, you can listen to audio podcasts or watch video podcasts streamed over the Internet from the iTunes Store on iPhone or iPod touch. You can also download audio and video podcasts to iPhone or iPod touch and those podcasts will be synced to your iTunes library when you connect the device to your computer (Requires iTunes 8.0.2 or later).

Products Affected

iPhone, iTunes Store, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (2nd generation)

For information on how to find, download, and listen to podcasts on an iPhone or iPod touch, see the section entitled "iTunes Store" in the iPhone User Guide or iPod touch User Guide.

Troubleshooting

  • If a video podcast is in a format that can't be played, you may see a "Format is not supported" message.
  • If an audio or video podcast can't be found or there is an issue with the server that hosts the podcast, you may see the "This movie could not be played" message.
    • In either of these cases, you may want to contact the podcast author by locating the podcast in iTunes on your Mac or Windows computer, and then click "Report A Concern".
  • If a podcast is not downloading, it may be due to the server that hosts the podcast, or because there is an issue with your current Internet connection. Deleting the podcast from Downloads may help solve the issue. To delete a podcast that is downloading or waiting to download, tap Downloads, swipe left or right over the podcast, then tap Delete.
  • On iPhone, podcasts can be streamed and downloaded over cellular or Wi-Fi connections, but there may be a limit on the maximum podcast episode download size over the cellular data network. If you select a podcast that is too large to download over the cellular data network and it is preventing other podcasts from downloading, updating to iPhone OS 3.0 or later should resolve this.

You don’t need an iTunes Store account to play or download podcasts.
