Power Mac G4: About the Optical Drive

You can install or run software from CDs using your optical drive. You can play multimedia on CD discs and music from audio CDs. Your optical drive can also write music, documents, and other digital files on CD-R and CD-RW discs. If you have a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive or a SuperDrive, you can also play DVD movies and use most DVD discs. SuperDrives can also record information on blank DVD-R (recordable DVD) discs.

Note: If you have older software that comes on floppy disks, contact the software manufacturer to see if the software is available on a CD or purchase an external USB floppy disk drive for your Power Mac G4 from your Apple dealer or the Apple Store (www.apple.com/store). Be aware that most USB floppy drives can only read 1.44 MB floppy disks and cannot read 800K floppy disks. Check with the vendor for complete information. Alternatively you could create disk images in Disk Copy and place those images on a different media format (Zip disk, CD-R/CD-RW, or external hard drive) that can be read by the Power Mac G4 computer.

Inserting a Disc

To install or use programs from a CD or DVD, follow these steps:

1. With the computer turned on, press the Media Eject () key on your
2. Apple Pro Keyboard to open the drive.
3. Place a disc in the tray, with the label facing up, and make sure the disc is lying flat.
4. Gently push the tray in to close it.
5. When the icon for the disc appears on the screen, the disc is ready to use.

Ejecting a Disc

You can eject a disc by dragging the disc icon to the Trash, or by pressing the Media Eject () key on your Apple Pro Keyboard. You can also eject a disc by holding down the mouse button while restarting your computer.
