External ports and connectors on the eMac computer

Note: All ports and connectors discussed in this document are located on the Input/Output (I/O) panel on the right side of the computer.

Headphone

Mini-headphone jack (headphones not included.)

The headphone jack provides enough current to drive a pair of low-impedance headphones. Headphones should have an impedance not lower than the recommended minimum impedance of 32 ohms. Headphones with lower impedance can be used, but with some degradation in performance.

Audio Input Jack

Analog audio input minijack; up to 16-bit stereo and 44.1 kHz sampling rate.

The external sound input jack is a 3.5 mm mini phone jack. The sound input jack accepts line-level stereo signals. It also accepts a stereo miniplug-to-RCA cable adapter for connecting stereo equipment to the computer.

USB

Total of five USB 1.1 compliant ports: three on the computer (shared on two 12 Mbps controllers); two on the keyboard. The keyboard also contains a USB hub.

The USB ports use USB Type A connectors, which have four pins each.

The USB ports support both low-speed and high-speed data transfers, at up to 1.5 Mbits per second and 12 Mbits per second, respectively. High-speed operation requires the use of shielded cables.

FireWire

Two 400 Mbps FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports ( actual rates will vary); 8 W shared.

When the computer is on, the power pin provides a maximum voltage of 24 V (no load) and up to 8 W total power (shared by both connectors). Zero voltage is present at the power pin when the computer is in Sleep mode or when it is off.

The eMac computer supports Target Disk Mode (TDM).

Modem

Built-in 56K V.90 modem. Actual modem speeds lower; speed depends on connection rate and other factors.

Note: Some eMac models do not include a modem.

The telephone connector for the modem is an RJ-11 connector on the I/O panel.

The modem has the following features:

  • Modem bit rates up to 56 kbps (supports V.90 and K56flex modem standards)
  • Group 3 fax modem bit rates up to 14.4 kbps

The modem appears to the system as a serial port that responds to the typical AT commands. The modem provides an analog sound output for

monitoring the progress of the modem connection.

10/100 Base-T Ethernet

The eMac has a built-in 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port. The eMac computer can be connected to an Ethernet cable from a hub, switch, or router, or to another Macintosh computer using a cross-connect cable. The connected device can be either a 10Base-T or a 100Base-TX device; the port automatically detects which type of device is connected.

Video Out Port

Mini-VGA output port (requires VGA display adapter). The mini-VGA output port supports only video mirroring. The external devices displays an image identical to that shown on the built-in display.

The external monitor supports only the display resolutions that are available on the internal monitor.

Five screen resolutions available:

  • 640 by 480 pixels at 138 Hz
  • 800 by 600 pixels at 112 Hz
  • 1024 by 768 pixels at 89 Hz
  • 1152 by 864 pixels at 80 Hz
  • 1280 by 960 pixels at 72 Hz
