Summary

This document explains how to connect headphones or speakers to your computer.

Products Affected

iMac (Flat Panel)

You can connect Apple Pro Speakers (included with some models), USB speakers, or analog speakers to your iMac (Flat Panel), iMac (17-inch Flat Panel), iMac (17-inch 1GHz), or iMac (USB 2.0) computer. You can also connect USB or analog headphones.

To connect Apple Pro Speakers:

1. Push on the Apple Pro Speaker jack to make sure it is firmly inserted into the Apple Speaker sound output port.
The Apple Pro Speaker jack has two detents (two points where you can feel a slight catch as it goes in). You should feel them as you push the jack into the sound output port. Giving the Pro Speaker's connector a slight twist while inserting it into the sound output port may make a better connection.

2. Verify the speaker volume and balance are set appropriately in the Sound pane of System Preferences.

To locate the sound output port on your iMac, refer to Figure 1 for iMac (Flat Panel) and iMac (17-inch Flat Panel) computers, and Figure 2 for iMac (17-inch 1GHz) and iMac (USB 2.0) computers.
