To find the serial number using software

On most computers with Mac OS X you can find the serial number in the About This Mac window. See technical document 106486, "About This Mac Window Provides Computer Serial Number".

To find the serial number located on the computer

There are two places the serial number is located on these models of iMac:

On the base of the computer
The serial number and Ethernet ID number with bar codes are etched into the metal base plate:

Inside the disc drive door
The serial number is located inside the disc drive door. This number can be seen if you eject the optical drive tray by pressing the Eject key on the keyboard.
