Understanding Genius for iPod and iPhone
Summary
Genius is an exciting new feature for iPod, iPhone, and iTunes which makes playlists from songs in your iTunes library that go great together. Genius playlists saved in iTunes can be synced to any iPod or iPhone, however creating and editing Genius playlists is available on these devices:
- iPod touch*
- iPod touch (2nd generation)
- iPhone*
- iPhone 3G*
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod nano (4th generation)
- iPod classic (120 GB)
Before you can use Genius on your device, you must set up Genius in iTunes 8. To learn more about this process, see How to Setup Genius in iTunes.
* Requires iPhone 2.1 software or later.
Products Affected
iPhone, iTunes, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod classic (120 GB), iPod nano (4th generation), iPod touch (2nd generation)
Genius playlists in iTunes 8 are created with preset limits of 25, 50, 75, or 100 songs. When saved Genius playlists are synced to your iPod or iPhone, they will contain the same songs as were present in the iTunes playlist. Genius playlists that are created or refreshed directly on an iPod or iPhone, however, are automatically set to a 25 songs limit. If Genius playlists are created or refreshed on your device, the changes made will automatically sync to iTunes if the device is set to sync music automatically.
If you sync a portion of your iTunes library to iPod or iPhone, in some instances, you may be unable to create a Genius playlist with some songs using your device. You may see one of the following messages:
- "This song does not have enough related songs to create a Genius Playlist"
- "Genius is unavailable for the selected song"
If this happens, try making a Genius playlist with those songs on your computer. If you can make a Genius playlist in iTunes on your computer, then it is likely that there are not enough songs on your iPod or iPhone that go great with the desired songs. Try syncing more of your iTunes library with your device. If you are still unable to make Genius playlists from those songs, consider making Genius playlists in iTunes first, then syncing them to your iPod or iPhone.
